On Display in the University Center: MD Mk. IV

For the next month, one of my architecture projects will be on display in the Girdler Gallery, adjacent to the Lower UC Dining hall. It's part of the Art,Architecture & Design department's Student Juried Exhibition.

The project, entitled MD Mark IV, is a fictional proposal for a visitor's center and gallery at the base of Lehigh's campus.

So you may have heard about the Bloom Box...

    But what exactly is it?

It's a fuel cell that has made creating energy very simple: (methane + oxygen) + (bloom box) = energy.
These boxes, released to the public the other day, have been in use by some silicon valley companies for well over a year now.

Quote from the the 60 Minutes story:
"[The Bloom Box] is like a very skinny battery that always runs. Sridhar [the CEO] feeds oxygen to it on one side, and fuel on the other. The two combine within the cell to create a chemical reaction that produces electricity. There's no need for burning or combustion, and no need for power lines from an outside source."

Supposedly one fuel cell (the size of a half sheet of paper) can power a lightbulb. the current Bloom boxes contain HUNDREDS of these little wafers in a box the size of a dumpster.

Don't believe me? Watch the 60 Minutes story for yourself:

Also, a nice little photo gallery of the public unveiling (http://www.engadget.com/photos/bloom-box-energy-server-hands-on/)

    Lately at Lehigh...

    - Professor Menon www.thebrownandwhite.com/media/storage/paper1233/news/2010/02/16/News/Ir.Department.Chair.Leaving.After.25.Years-3871849.shtml">will be leaving Lehigh at the end of the semester. He's been here 25 years but doesn't look a day older than 40. How does he do it?

-Lehigh has an iPhone App. For it's first version, not bad, but a little slow and bloated. 3 stars, maybe 4 if it improves.

    - Everyone read Night in grade school, right? Well Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel will be speaking at our commencement this year!

...and by the way, in 1 week i've jumped to the #5 position for google queries on "lehigh architecture"!

The SDI lives on: Shooting down a different type of threat.

While the Strategic Defense Initiative was a plan to create a defense barrier against soviet missiles, Intellectual Ventures Lab has created a new type of laser defense system - for mosquitos.

    Dear Nike, Good Job.

Nike and Director Brian Beletic have teamed up to create what I think might be one of the best commercials about sports in a long time. Asking the question "Everyone get's knocked down, How quick are you going to get up?" This commercial really shows what drives athletes: determination and discipline.

Will School Be Closed Tomorrow? Preparing for Snowpocalypse 2.0

    Mario's Opinion: Yes.School's Opinion: Unknown.

Let's look at the facts:- 3 inches overnight,- throughout the morning and afternoon tomorrow, 10-14 inches.
    - high winds will bring "blizzard" like conditions to the Lehigh Valley
    - we live on a hill.
The situation seems perfect for a cancellation: lots of snow happening at the right time of day.Can the area keep the roads clear long enough for professors to get to school? We'll find out in about a few hours.

Meanwhile, I'm going to finish my dinner and get working on homework. I have a lot of work due tomorrow if the school still decides to have classes.
