Considering one can argue (in jest) that the iPhone is more valuable than a dog or cat, this is a horrible act of cruelty. After spending almost $1500 on an iPhone + service plan over the past 2 years, this person decided not to sell his phone on eBay or craigslist, were he easily could have made 4 or 500 dollars, and could have paid for the price of TWO Palm pre's.

Just like there are laws against animal cruelty, I think there should be a law against expensive gadget cruelty. Exhibit A:
